Flag: Morocco

It says Morocco: the country, the people or the team.

In a bio or username it is usually a badge of identity: the sender is Moroccan or has Moroccan roots. Many Moroccans live in France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany, so you may see it next to a European flag, which usually reads as both heritages at once, not as a holiday.

In a reply or a post it tags the subject. Under a photo of a tagine, Marrakech or the Atlas Mountains it means this is Moroccan. During a match it means I'm backing Morocco, especially with a football or a lion, the team's nickname being the Atlas Lions. On its own it is a warm, proud marker, not a question or a mood.

What is on the Moroccan flag?

A green five-pointed star, drawn in outline, on plain red.

Red has been Morocco's colour since the 17th century under the Alaouite dynasty, which still reigns. The green star, known as the Seal of Solomon, was added in 1915. Green is the traditional colour of Islam, and the five points are usually explained as the five pillars of the faith; the interlaced outline distinguishes it from a solid star.

Morocco sits in north-west Africa, across the strait from Spain, with Arabic and Amazigh (Berber) as official languages.
