fullwidth grave accent

Fullwidth Grave Accent

64/225

` is the fullwidth counterpart of the ordinary backtick : it takes a wide text cell but adds no new punctuation meaning. Use it in width-aware East Asian text or conversion work; code that expects the narrow backtick may reject it. Compatibility normalization can fold it back to .

Text symbol

What ` means

It is the wide, width-preserving form of the ordinary backtick.

In fixed-grid Chinese, Japanese, or Korean text, it occupies a full-width cell. In ordinary Latin-script prose, the extra width is usually the visible difference; it can also change alignment in mixed-width data.

Treat it as a separate character when a format distinguishes widths. Use the narrow where the surrounding text or data format expects that form.

Why does this fullwidth form exist?

It keeps a backtick in the wide grid used beside CJK characters.

East Asian character sets had to place wide Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters beside narrower marks inherited from ASCII-era systems. A fullwidth form let the mark occupy the same cell width and supported conversion between mixed-width repertoires.

Japan's JIS C 6226 character standard dates to 1978. An IBM table for JIS X 0208 maps ` as JIS 212E alongside EUC and PC encodings; whether this exact cell appeared in the 1978 edition remains unresolved. The same fullwidth/halfwidth convention also appears in Chinese and Korean implementations.

Will it work as a backtick in code?

Usually no: code that expects the narrow may reject `.

In source code, a bug report, or a Markdown example, treat it as a possible width substitution. In a CJK text field, the fullwidth character may be intentional; use the form the format requires.

Technical and formatting-specific; in ordinary chat, its width is the main clue.

In code, its familiar shape can hide the wrong width.

Questions people ask

2

Does ` put a grave accent on the next letter?

No. It is a standalone spacing character, not a combining mark, so it will not place an accent on the next letter. A combining mark or a precomposed letter is used for a diacritic.

Why did my backtick become fullwidth?

Your input method may be in fullwidth mode. A Japanese input method can emit ` in that mode; switch to halfwidth or direct input for the ordinary .
