garay digit nine

Garay digit nine

𐵉 is the Garay 9: the digit for nine in a Garay numeral. Garay writing runs right to left, but numbers read left to right, so a number mixed into Latin text may appear on an unexpected side.

What 𐵉 means

It marks nine in a Garay numeral. Assane Faye created Garay in Senegal to write Wolof, a language spoken there. Its origin story links the project to a 1961 radio appeal by Senegalese president Léopold Sédar Senghor; Garay's first publications appeared in January 1961. Faye designed its forms for readers familiar with Arabic writing, with additional influence from Latin.

By 2024, recorded uses included literacy teaching, personal notes, lists, textbooks, folktales, maps, and Qur'an translation, including work in Mandinka as well as Wolof. Senegal's official orthography for Wolof uses Latin letters; Wolofal is an Arabic-based way to write it. Garay is a distinct option alongside those traditions.

Why does 𐵉 move in mixed text?

Garay runs right to left; its numbers run left to right. When a Garay number sits in a line with Latin text, bidirectional layout can shift where it appears relative to nearby words, although its digits remain in the order typed. Read the number's digits left to right rather than following the surrounding line's direction.

Neutral inside Garay numerals; outside them, it marks a deliberate switch of writing system.

In non-Garay text, readers may not recognize it or their font may show a box.
