What 줄 means
Context decides which Korean meaning 줄 has.
As a noun, 줄 can mean a rope or string, a line or queue, a row of writing, a drawn line, a useful connection, or an instrument string.
In patterns such as 줄 알다 and 줄 모르다, it can express knowing how to do something or thinking something is the case. 시험 망친 줄 알았어 means “I thought I had failed the test.” Translating 줄 alone as “line” misses a lot.
Why does 줄 look like a square?
Hangul fits its component letters into a syllable block.
Unicode can store 줄 as one precomposed syllable or as a sequence of separate Hangul letters called conjoining jamo. Fonts may position those letters differently, and normalization can change the stored sequence without changing the intended syllable.
An early written form appears in the 1447 Seokbo sangjeol (석보상절), a Korean book recounting the Buddha’s life and teachings, as Middle Korean 줄〮. Hangul was created in 1443 and its purpose and principles were explained in 1446 as a way to make Korean writing accessible to people who could not use Chinese characters. Before Hangul, Idu, Gugyeol and Hyangchal adapted Chinese characters to write Korean; they belong to that earlier writing environment, not to the direct ancestry of 줄’s shape.
Neutral as a written syllable; the Korean phrase supplies its tone.
Without its phrase, don’t assume 줄 means “line.”
