Khitan Small Script Character-18B17

24/471

𘬗 is a written character in the Khitan Small Script, which wrote the Khitan language. Its Unicode-style name is an inventory label, not a Khitan reading. The script combines word signs with sound signs, which cluster into words; a single character may be only part of one.

What 𘬗 means

Its ID names the character, not its sound or word. The script mixes signs for whole words with signs for sounds. Sound signs commonly join in a cluster to spell one word, so a single character may be only one piece of that spelling.

The common cluster layout places two characters side by side at the top; another starts with one centered character. These are layout variants, not meaning changes.

Why is it called “small” script?

“Small” names the later script, not a smaller size. Khitan rulers developed it to write their language, drawing on Chinese character forms and Uyghur writing principles. Its creation is conventionally dated to around 925. The earliest surviving inscriptions are mid-eleventh-century stone epitaphs (tomb memorials). The script remained in use under the Jin dynasty until 1191; Jurchen writing later drew on both Khitan scripts.

Why does 𘬗 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
