What 𘭜 means
Kane’s 2009 list reconstructs its reading as tir.
That is a reconstructed sound, not a translation. Sound signs join into word blocks. Read each block left to right, then down; columns run vertically right to left.
How did Khitan Small Script develop?
It was devised around 925 to write Khitan.
Its forms drew on Chinese characters and its sound system followed writing used by Uyghur neighbors to the west. A 2025 study identifies the Liao-era tomb inscription of Yelü Yugulin Taishi as the earliest known text in the small script. It appeared on monuments and in records, letters, poems, and translations. Jin rulers abolished it in 1191; Jurchen writers later modeled their scripts on the large and small Khitan scripts.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘭜 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
