Large Type Piece Stem-4

𜹉 is one component in the large-letter set made for Hewlett-Packard 2640 terminals, not a finished letter or message. The pieces build terminal headlines while ordinary text stays at its usual size.

What 𜹉 means

It supplies one part of a large terminal letter.

HP’s 1977 service manual lists the large-character set as an optional way to make terminal headlines. Each finished character uses nine pieces in a 3×3 grid. Unicode preserves the pieces for legacy-data conversion and terminal emulation.

Why does 𜹉 look like only a fragment?

Because the glyph is one tile, not a finished character.

A whole letter needs the other pieces in place. In a January 2024 feature request about the Cascadia Code font, its author noted that Visual Studio’s extra line spacing broke the vertical joins.

Why does 𜹉 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
