What 𐦾 means

𐦾 is a word sign cautiously glossed as “people” or “persons.”

A cautious Meroitic rmt translation is “people” or “persons”: the Latin-letter label rmt points to Egyptian rmT, meaning “people.” Unicode groups it with Meroitic logograms derived from Demotic, a cursive form of Egyptian writing. Meroitic is only partly deciphered as of 2026, so the gloss is useful, not a full translation.

It functions as a whole-word sign in Meroitic writing, usually set in lines read right to left. In transcription, keep it as one word-level sign; rmt is its label, not three letters to sound out.

Why was Meroitic cursive created?

It gave Meroitic a general-use way to be written.

Meroitic cursive emerged in the third century BCE; the earliest dated Meroitic cursive text cited in the Mnamon guide is around 200 BCE. It served the Meroitic language of Kush, the ancient kingdom.

Its shapes developed from Demotic, a cursive form of Egyptian writing. Meroitic hieroglyphs served monumental temple and royal inscriptions; cursive was the general-use style, so the two forms were not interchangeable.

After the fourth century CE, Meroitic was gradually replaced by Nubian; by the sixth century, Coptic writing had superseded the Meroitic scripts.

Historical and specialist: it suits discussion of Meroitic writing, not unmarked everyday messages.

Outside a Meroitic context, the sign’s “people” gloss is not self-explanatory.

Questions people ask

3

Is 𐦾 an Egyptian hieroglyph?

No. It is written in Meroitic cursive, whose forms developed from Egyptian Demotic. Meroitic hieroglyphs were a separate style used for temple and royal inscriptions.

Does typing rmt produce 𐦾?

No. rmt is the Latin-letter label, while 𐦾 is a separate encoded character. Typing those letters leaves them as letters unless an input method explicitly maps them.

Why does 𐦾 appear as a box?

The active font may lack Meroitic Cursive coverage. The box is a missing-glyph placeholder; a font and text system that support the script can display the sign.
