What 🢒 means
It points right without drawing the arrow's shaft.
Use it beside a label or step when a compact pointer is enough; the complete arrow → includes a shaft and makes the connection clearer.
By itself, it marks direction; the surrounding text supplies the destination.
Its path runs from symbol fonts to Unicode
Kris Holmes and Charles Bigelow designed Lucida Icons, Arrows, and Stars in 1990–91. Microsoft renamed the symbol fonts Wingdings and released them in 1992 for personal-computer and graphical-interface work, including pointing and indicating.
A 2011 Unicode proposal labels the corresponding Wingdings 3 head “draw right.” It argues that encoding font symbols makes them searchable and interoperable. Unicode gives the character a text identity instead of relying on a Wingdings letter mapping.
Why does this arrowhead look different?
The selected font determines whether it appears and how.
It is font-dependent: a document may draw a different shape or have no glyph for it. Unicode preserves the character identity between documents; a legacy symbol-font letter may not display without that font.
Technical and typographic; at home in diagrams and step labels.
If the reader's font lacks a glyph, the pointer can disappear.

1Why does 🢒 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
