tangut component-159

Tangut Component-159

This Tangut component is a numbered piece used to describe Tangut characters, not a word with a fixed translation. It mainly appears in dictionaries, ideographic description sequences (IDS), Unicode data, and Tangut font or input work. Its number is an index label; the glyph by itself does not tell you how a Tangut word is pronounced.

What 𘢞 means

It is a structural piece of Tangut writing, not a word. This Tangut component has no fixed pronunciation or translation by itself. In dictionaries, components can serve as lookup keys; in a Tangut ideographic description sequence (IDS), they are pieces in a notation that shows how a character is built. The number is an index label, not a reading.

The Tangut script was created under Western Xia’s first emperor around 1036 to support state-building, including a Buddhist canon and a distinct political identity alongside Song China. Tangut rulers followed a nearby precedent set by the Khitan, another people whose rulers had established a script for their own language. Tangut later carried Buddhist, official, and secular texts; it remained in use under the Yuan and Ming dynasties before becoming obsolete.

Is this a Tangut character or just a component?

It is encoded for component use, not as a word entry.

A Tangut woodblock linguistic text surfaced at a Beijing auction in November 2014. The Unicode proposal for additional Tangut components maps its entry 176 to Component-159 and shows regular and cursive sample characters. That classification records how the shape was used inside characters; it does not assign the component its own word meaning.

Why does Tangut resemble Chinese?

Its square characters resemble Chinese writing, but the scripts are distinct. Tangut is a separate script for the Tangut language. A visual resemblance does not make it a form of Chinese writing.

The Tangut Components block brings together component systems used in modern Chinese, Japanese, Russian, and English reference works; these traditions do not share one universal component inventory.

Scholarly and technical: it signals Tangut study, cataloguing, encoding, or font work, rather than an everyday message.

Treat 159 as an index label, not a translation or pronunciation.

Your input method may have entered the character correctly, but the app cannot draw it without a Tangut-capable font. In a browser, a web page can supply a Tangut font; other apps may rely on fonts installed on the device.
