Tangut Component-187

187/768

𘢺 is a Tangut component used to describe and index full Tangut characters; by itself, it has no word-level reading. Dictionaries and scholars use the component set to index and describe the Xixia script, so this numbered label names a reference part, not an ancient word.

What 𘢺 means

It is a structural part of Tangut writing, not a word.

Full Tangut characters combine components. Dictionaries use those pieces, along with stroke order, to sort and describe whole characters. This component set brings together pieces from different reference systems; historically, scholars did not share a single standard list.

That gives 𘢺 a role in an index or a description of a full character, but not a standalone Tangut reading.

Why was Tangut writing created?

To write the Tangut language.

The script was created around 1036 under the first ruler of Western Xia. Tangut writing appears in official, private, and religious texts, including books, Buddhist sutras, inscriptions, and manuscripts.

After Western Xia fell to the Mongols, people continued writing Tangut during the Yuan and Ming periods; the script became obsolete by the end of the Ming. It was rediscovered late in the 19th century and largely deciphered through early in the 20th century, including the work of Russian scholar Nikolai Nevsky.

Is Tangut the same as Chinese writing?

No. Tangut is a separate script with a similar visual style.

Tangut characters often look compact and square, but the script was developed for the Tangut language and is unrelated to Chinese ideographs. Its component repertoire is not the Chinese Kangxi radical system.

Khitan and Jurchen are other historical East Asian scripts with similar component-and-radical structures. That is a broader script-level parallel; it does not establish a direct relationship between those scripts and this exact component.

Technical and archival: alone, 𘢺 reads like a component label in a reference system, not a natural-language message.

Do not read it as a translatable Tangut word by itself.

Why does 𘢺 sometimes show as a box?

The active font, or its fallback, may lack this Tangut glyph. The box is a display gap; the text still contains 𘢺.
