Tangut Component-417

417/768

𘦠 is a Tangut component: a structural clue used to describe complete characters, not a word to read by itself. It appears mainly in component indexes, Tangut research, font work, and input tools.

Text symbol

What 𘦠 means

It marks a structural part inside a complete Tangut character.

The Tangut script, also called the Xixia script, was developed under Emperor Li Yuanhao around 1036. It gave the Western Xia state a writing system of its own, supporting a Buddhist canon (a collection of Buddhist writings) and a written identity distinct from Song China.

A dated document from 1070/1071 may be the earliest known Tangut writing. Manuscripts from Khara-khoto, a Tangut-era city, include Buddhist scripture and translations of Chinese works on government, ethics, encyclopedic reference, military affairs, and literature. This component belongs to that writing system; its index label is not a translation.

Why doesn't this component have one fixed meaning?

A component helps identify a character; it does not translate it.

A dictionary radical is a part chosen as a lookup key, while an Ideographic Description Sequence spells out the pieces of a character. Tangut analysis also allows a graphic component to act as a clue to pronunciation. The role of 𘦠 depends on the full character and the index being used; read the whole sign for its meaning and sound.

Technical and archival: useful for Tangut character analysis, font work, and input tools.

Do not translate the component by itself; identify the complete Tangut character it helps build.

Questions people ask

1

Why does this Tangut component show as a box?

The current font likely lacks Tangut Components coverage. Use a Tangut-capable font such as Noto Serif Tangut; the box signals a missing glyph, not a different character.
