upper middle left one sixteenth block

Upper middle-left sixteenth block

This small tile is from the Robotron Z9001 graphics set; its machine character code was D4. Text-mode programs arranged such tiles in grid cells to build coarse screen pictures. Read it as a fragment of old computer graphics, not a complete picture.

What 𜺔 means

It marks a one-sixteenth patch in the upper-middle-left of a larger block. The Robotron Z9001, an East German home computer introduced in 1984, displayed graphic characters in text cells so programs could sketch pictures without addressing each pixel separately.

Unicode preserves the old graphics

Unicode began encoding box-drawing and block characters for computer compatibility in 1991, then expanded that preservation work. A 2021 proposal included the Robotron set so exchanged text could preserve its graphics and emulators—programs that imitate older computers—could display them.

Why does 𜺔 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
