What ꋂ means
It represents one spoken syllable in standardized Liangshan Yi writing. The standard's Roman-letter spelling is ce; it names the syllable rather than translating it into an English word. A single syllable does not tell you the whole word or sentence, so read it in surrounding Yi text.
How did Liangshan Yi writing become standardized?
It was standardized from one regional Yi tradition. Older Yi writing had distinct regional forms and appeared in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical manuscripts copied by village priests. Historical labels include Cuan and Wei for regional traditions. The earliest surviving example commonly cited is writing on a bronze bell dated 1485; older origins remain debated.
The Liangshan standard was devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980. It supported education, newspapers, public signs, and literature, but was designed for Liangshan Yi rather than every Yi language or traditional script.
