arabic letter noon with ring

Pashto Noon with Ring

182/249

ڼ meaning: it is Pashto's retroflex n, /ɳ/, made with the tongue tip curled back. The ring, called pandak, distinguishes it from plain ن. Pashto uses this adapted letter to write a sound its spelling needs to mark.

Text symbol

What ڼ means

It marks a retroflex n. For /ɳ/, curl the tongue tip back; the pandak ring distinguishes this sound from the ordinary n written with ن.

The mid-sixteenth-century Khayr al-bayan, associated with Bayazid Ansari, lists the Pashto alphabet and explains Pashto spelling. Surviving copies are dated 1651 and 1668. The letter adapts the Perso-Arabic writing tradition to mark a Pashto sound that plain ن does not distinguish.
