combining dot above left

Combining dot above left

᷸ is a combining mark whose meaning depends on the writing system around it. In Syriac it can distinguish word forms; in phonetic notation associated with Franz Boas it marks a central vowel; in Cyrillic liturgical notation used in Typicons it can accompany chant cues. In Typicon notation, the dot can be square.

What ᷸ means

Its job depends on the notation around it. In Syriac writing, it can sit between letters to distinguish word forms, including present-tense verbs. In the phonetic system associated with Franz Boas, it marks a central vowel—a vowel formed with the tongue near the middle of the mouth. In older Cyrillic liturgical notation used in Typicons (books of church-service rules), it can accompany kavyki, marks that guide chanting.

Syriac examples appear in writings attributed to Ephrem, a Syriac writer who lived 303–373, and in a 1923 edition of John of Ephesus. These references show older use but do not set a precise starting date. A report by the American Anthropological Association records the phonetic convention in 1916. Typicon kavyki are linked to systems attributed to Saint Gennadius, a church leader active in 1484–1504, and later used in Nikita Syrnikov’s system.

Why is the dot placed to the left?

In Syriac, placement can change the mark’s job. Syriac notation uses a dot over one letter differently from ᷸ between two letters. The between-letter dot can distinguish otherwise identical spellings or readings and may mark a grammatical class such as present tense. A separate Syriac feminine dot marks a suffix; its position can look left-sided in West Syriac, while East Syriac can use two dots below.

Boas-style phonetic notation shifts the dot left of dotless ı or ɩ to mark a central vowel. In the Typicon tradition, the dot may be square and sit beside kavyki, marks that give chanting instructions for the Beatitudes Troparia, a group of church hymns.

How do I type it without breaking the letter?

Put it after the character it modifies. Combining marks follow their base in text; the font sets where the dot appears.

For the Boas-style central vowel, use dotless ı or ɩ as the base. Ordinary i keeps its own dot, which this mark does not hide. If the placement looks wrong, check the font’s support for the script.

A specialist mark whose reading comes from its Syriac, phonetic, or liturgical notation.

A lone mark does not tell you which notation’s reading applies.

Why is the dot square in Typicon notation?

Typicon notation can draw this dot as a square. The shape belongs to that notation and does not make the text a different character.
