What + means
It fills a full character cell.
Japanese typography calls a full-cell form zenkaku, or fullwidth. Older East Asian encodings commonly gave basic ASCII characters (Latin letters, digits, and signs used in plain-text code) one display cell, while Chinese, Japanese, or Korean characters occupied two. Unicode preserves paired fullwidth forms such as + so text can move between those systems without losing its width choice.
Japanese text layout treats plus as a math operator; in a fullwidth setting it can occupy a fixed cell among Japanese characters. Its meaning remains addition.
Will + work in code?
Only if the program accepts fullwidth input.
Programs that require ASCII (the basic Latin letters, digits, and signs used in plain-text code) expect . Unicode's NFKC compatibility normalization—a text conversion that can remove width distinctions—can turn + into for matching, but then the width is lost. Keep + when that width matters.
In the 2010s, some online text generators presented fullwidth runs as decoration for vaporwave, a retro-internet art style; the stretched look comes from the whole run, not + alone.
Neutral and typographic: the fullwidth form signals a layout choice, not a new arithmetic meaning.
In code, + can look like but fail where ASCII is required.

5Questions people ask
1Why does + show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
