khitan small script character-18b0e

Khitan Small Script Character 18B0E

15/471

To enter 𘬎 in Word for Windows, type 18B0E and press Alt+X. It belongs to Khitan Small Script, a medieval way to write Khitan. Its computer-assigned label identifies the sign, but not its reading; the historical text shows whether it stands for a word or part of a sound cluster.

What 𘬎 means

In Microsoft Word for Windows, type 18B0E and press Alt+X.

In Linux text fields using GTK, press Ctrl+Shift+U, type 18B0E, then press Enter. The macOS Unicode Hex Input keyboard accepts only four-digit values, so it cannot enter this five-digit code directly.

What does 𘬎 mean in Khitan writing?

Its Unicode label identifies a sign; it does not translate it. Khitan Small Script combines logograms (whole-word signs) and phonograms (sound signs). Phonograms often cluster to spell words, so the surrounding inscription matters. The script is only partly deciphered as of 2026, and the label does not tell you which kind of sign this is.

Historical accounts credit Yelü Diela with creating this script about 925, after Khitan Large Script, with Uyghur writing said to have inspired it. Its purpose was to record spoken Khitan. A 2017 chronology of surviving small-script monuments lists a 1053 epitaph for Yelü Zongjiao as the earliest example in its record.

Most surviving texts are funerary epitaphs and eulogies for Khitan rulers and aristocrats; other examples appear on monuments, mirrors, tallies, non-circulating coins and a jade cup. The script remained in use under the Jin after Liao fell, and Khitan writing helped shape Jurchen writing. Tomb inscriptions unearthed in 1922 revived scholarly study; an older bilingual stele had previously been mistaken for Jurchen.

1

Why can 𘬎 display while Khitan text layout looks wrong?

A font can include this glyph while the app lacks Khitan layout rules. The script uses vertical columns, top to bottom and right to left; inside a phonetic cluster, signs are ordered left to right, then down.
