What 𘭤 means

Read it alongside the surrounding Khitan text.

No secure standalone reading or translation for this exact graph is established as of 2026. Khitan Small Script was created about 925 by Yelü Diela to write the Khitan language. It uses logograms (signs for whole words) and phonograms (signs for sounds); some words need clusters of several characters working together. 𘭤 may be one part of a cluster rather than a complete word.

The surviving dated inscriptions run from 1053–1173, and funerary inscriptions were rediscovered in 1922. Khitan writing appears on epitaphs, monuments, correspondence, flags, tallies, exam materials, poems, and translated books. Jurchen writers made their own large and small scripts in 1119 and 1138, drawing on the Khitan tradition. The Jin court prohibited Khitan writing in 1191, after which it fell out of practical use.

What does 𘭤 mean when someone sends it?

Ask what source or surrounding text it came from.

If 𘭤 arrives alone, ask for the surrounding inscription or intended context before translating it. The sender may be sharing a historical graph, a Unicode sample, or a font test; the glyph itself does not tell you which.

Archival and specialist: outside a Khitan-text or Unicode context, it looks like a text specimen rather than a conversational symbol.

Do not assign it a translation from its shape alone.

Why does 𘭤 appear as a blank box?

A font without a Khitan Small Script glyph may show a missing-glyph box. The box is a display fallback, not a different character.

Is 𘭤 a Chinese character?

No. It belongs to Khitan Small Script, which was made to write the Khitan language. The script drew on Chinese character forms and writing ideas, but the two scripts are not interchangeable.
