Khitan Small Script Character-18B63

100/471

𘭣 is a Khitan Small Script character, but the glyph alone does not give a dependable translation. In a Khitan inscription it may stand for a word or a sound within a cluster, so its neighbors matter. If someone sends it alone, ask for the text or source.

Text symbol

What 𘭣 means

Its assigned name identifies the sign, not its Khitan reading.

Khitan Small Script remains only partly deciphered as of 2026, and Unicode names its characters sequentially rather than giving them glosses. The encoded name identifies the sign; it does not tell you how to pronounce or translate it. Some signs represent words, while others represent sounds and join into clusters, so the inscription supplies essential context.

Created about 925 by Yelü Diela, the script is said to have been inspired by Uyghur writing. It wrote the Khitan language alongside the distinct Khitan Large Script. Khitan Small Script appears in funerary epitaphs on stone; one scholarly chronology begins with the 1053 epitaph for Yelü Zongjiao. Other finds include monuments, mirrors, tallies, badges, non-circulating coins, and a jade cup.

What if someone sends it alone?

Ask for the inscription or surrounding text.

On its own, the character has no dependable modern message meaning. Treat it as a historical-script sample, a quotation, or a font test until the sender gives you context.

Khitan Small Script and Khitan Large Script were separate writing systems. Some Jurchen Small Script inscriptions use clusters structured like those in Khitan Small Script; that script-level connection does not identify this particular character as a Jurchen sign. Khitan-script use continued under Jin rule until an edict ended official use in 1191.

Historical inscription study and specialist transcription are its natural register.

Why does it appear as a box?

The chosen font may lack Khitan Small Script coverage. Use a font that includes the script; a missing glyph is a font-coverage issue.

How is Khitan Small Script laid out digitally?

Traditionally, text runs in vertical columns ordered right to left, like traditional Chinese writing. Unicode also supports left-to-right horizontal clusters and linear horizontal text; clustered writing needs script-aware layout.
