What 𘰏 means
It is a sound sign used to spell Khitan words.
Small-script words combine one to seven basic signs. Its numeric name identifies the character, not its Khitan sound or translation; surrounding text shows its role.
Why was Khitan Small Script created?
To record the Khitan language.
The Khitan developed this small script in the early 10th century to write their language alongside Chinese. Its forms drew on Chinese characters, while its sound-based design was inspired by writing used by the Uyghurs, a people farther west.
Its earliest surviving inscriptions date to the 11th century and are mostly tomb epitaphs. Use continued under Jin rule; the Jurchen, founders of Jin, based their scripts partly on Khitan models. Jin authorities officially banned Khitan writing in 1191. A Liao tomb excavation in 1922 brought the script back to scholarly attention.
