What 𘰬 means
No; “spring” translates a whole Khitan word, not this glyph alone. A 2010 encoding proposal gives its approximate pronunciation as heu; that is a sound value, not a translation.
An inscription-based calendar transcription reads 𘰬𘮒 as heu-úr for “spring”; its phonetic spellings are approximate reconstructions.
When and why was Khitan Small Script used?
It was created around 925 to write Khitan.
Yelü Diela created it alongside Khitan Large Script. Surviving examples are mainly stone epitaphs—memorials for the dead—and eulogies, plus bronze inscriptions. Khitan scripts recorded literature and translated Chinese history and medicine. Use continued in Western Liao and Jin; Jurchen writers adapted Khitan models for their own scripts. Funerary inscriptions entered scholarly view in 1922.
