What ﹀ means
It closes a single-angle bracket pair in vertical CJK text. The pair ︿…﹀ can enclose an article title in Taiwanese vertical Chinese. In Mainland Chinese, single-angle title marks can appear inside 《》. Japanese translation guidance treats 〈〉 differently: retain them when they appear in the source instead of using them as ordinary Japanese quotation marks.
﹀ is a compatibility character kept for older East Asian vertical typesetting; it does not introduce a new punctuation meaning. Chinese punctuation expanded during the 20th century. The 1951 punctuation rules in Mainland China already listed 《》 as book-title marks, giving the nested-title convention a documented setting without dating ﹀ itself.
How should I type ﹀?
For new vertical text, use 〉 and enable vertical layout. Unicode recommends storing the ordinary CJK bracket and letting the layout select its vertical glyph.
NFKC normalization folds ﹀ to 〉. Avoid that normalization when the exact character identity matters.
Technical and typographic; outside vertical CJK text, it usually signals an exact-character or legacy-encoding need.
NFKC turns ﹀ into 〉 when exact character identity matters.
