signwriting rub multiple

SignWriting Rub Multiple

275/672

𝤒 is the mark for repeated rubbing in Sutton SignWriting, a system for writing sign languages: a hand moves across a surface without lifting. It is one piece of a sign, not a complete sign by itself. SignWriting grew from Valerie Sutton’s notation for recording dance movement.

Text symbol

What 𝤒 means

It marks contact that repeats while the hand stays on the surface. In Sutton SignWriting, “rub multiple” is the repeated form of rubbing: the hand moves against a surface without lifting. The handshape and placement show which hand is involved and where it makes contact.

The spiral does not choose a circular path. Separate movement symbols show the route, which can go up or down.

Why doesn’t 𝤒 show a whole sign?

It records an action, not a complete sign. SignWriting places handshapes, contact symbols, locations, and movement in two dimensions; 𝤒 supplies only the contact type. Place it with the relevant handshape at the point of contact.

SignWriting guidance treats the contact location as the sign’s center. If the components are placed apart, their relationship can be harder to read.

Where did SignWriting come from?

It began as movement notation for signs and gestures. In fall 1974 in Copenhagen, researchers asked Valerie Sutton to record filmed signing and gesture. She adapted DanceWriting, the notation she had developed to record dance movement.

Deaf readers and educators, as well as dictionaries, newsletters, and software, use SignWriting to write sign languages. 𝤒 is a reusable notation instruction, not a complete sign with one universal translation.

Alone, it gives a contact instruction, not a complete sign.

Why does 𝤒 show as a box?

It may appear as a box when the active font lacks Sutton SignWriting coverage. A font with coverage can display 𝤒, but the complete sign still needs its two-dimensional layout.
