Tangut Component-015

15/768

𘠎 is a cataloged part of Tangut writing, not a word with its own translation. Its numbered name identifies a component used to analyze or index larger characters; the full character carries the reading and meaning. A font without Tangut support can show it as a box.

What 𘠎 means

No; it is a component, not a standalone word.

“Tangut component 015” is a modern catalog label. Components are structural pieces used to describe larger Tangut characters; many also serve as dictionary-indexing radicals. The full character supplies the reading and meaning, so this component alone has no reliable one-word translation.

Tangut dictionaries do not all divide characters into the same component inventory. A component can serve different meaning-related or sound-related roles in different characters, so its outline alone does not tell you what a complete character means.

Why was the Tangut script created?

It gave Western Xia a written form of Tangut.

Around 1036, Emperor Li Yuanhao ordered the script as part of building the medieval Western Xia state in northwestern China. It helped distinguish the dynasty from Song-ruled China and was used for a Tangut Buddhist canon.

Tangut writing appears in government and private records, Buddhist texts, and translations of Chinese classics, military works, and literature. Its forms resemble Chinese characters, but Tangut is a distinct script; Khitan rulers also created scripts for their language. After Western Xia fell in 1227, Tangut writing continued under Yuan and Ming rule, then fell out of use by the end of the Ming dynasty.

Specialist and archival: component analysis, Tangut catalogues, and font testing suit it; in an ordinary message, it needs an explanation.

Its catalog label is not a translation: it identifies a component, not a complete Tangut word.

Does 𘠎 show as a box?

Yes. A box means the active font lacks 𘠎. As of 2026, Noto Serif Tangut’s specimen lists Tangut Components; the app still needs that font or a compatible fallback.
