Tangut Component-557

557/768

𘨬 is Tangut Component 557, a structural lookup label used to group and describe complete Tangut characters, not a word with its own translation. It appears in component indexes and digital text work; a font without Tangut coverage may show a blank box.

Text symbol

What 𘨬 means

It is an indexing label, not a translated word. Tangut Component 557 is a structural piece used to sort and describe complete Tangut characters. Some references call such an indexing piece a “radical,” like a dictionary heading; that term names its filing role, not a reading for 𘨬. Tangut has no single standard component system, so this number identifies one particular way of organizing the script.

The Tangut script was created in 1036 under the Western Xia state for administration and Buddhist translation. The earliest Tangut document handed down to us is an official message from 1072. Writing continued after Western Xia fell; a 1502 inscription is later evidence. These dates belong to the script’s history, not to a separate word meaning for 𘨬.

Why does 𘨬 show as a box?

A font without Tangut coverage can leave it blank. Software may show a blank box (“tofu”) or substitute a fallback glyph when its font lacks this character. Noto Serif Tangut documentation lists coverage for both the Tangut and Tangut Components blocks. That box is a font failure, not a different character.

For structural notes, use an ideographic description sequence: a notation that shows how a character’s parts are arranged. Typing component signs beside one another does not build a new Tangut character; use a complete encoded ideograph when actual text needs one.

Technical: this label belongs in Tangut indexes and structural analysis, not as an ordinary word.

Do not treat Component-557 as though it were a complete Tangut word.

Why does 𘨬 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Tangut Components block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
