What 󠄕 means
It requests a registered form of the Han character before it. Han characters are the written characters used in Chinese, Japanese, and other East Asian writing. VS38 follows one to narrow the allowed glyph choice.
“38” is not a universal style label. VS38 font support depends on the full pair: the same selector can request different glyph subsets (sets of acceptable drawings) for different base characters and registered collections.
Unicode's IVS proposal trail runs from 1997–2004. It addressed two needs: text processing benefits from one stable character identity, while records of names, places, publishing, and historical documents may need an exact glyph. Independent collections let groups register those variants without creating a new character for every drawing.
Does VS38 mean anything when sent alone?
Usually nothing: it is technical data, not a message. With a Han base and a registered pair, it requests the precise form recorded for that sequence.
Alone, or after a character with no registered VS38 pairing, it has no reading. Unsupported software shows the base as usual and hides the selector, so the text may look unchanged.
How do I type VS38?
Use VS38 only as the second part of a documented Han-character pair. An input method for Chinese, Japanese, or Korean may offer the complete ideographic variation sequence as a character choice; some show a menu attached to the base character.
VS38 font support depends on the whole pair: the editor and font must recognize that registered sequence. Entering VS38 alone does not test support.
Technical and invisible: it belongs in encoded text, not casual conversation.
Alone, it has no reading; an unsupported pair may look unchanged.

What it means when someone sends it to you
3 readingsRequests that base's registered glyph form in the collection.
Don't confuse it with
1️ VS16 vs VS38: VS16 can request emoji presentation after some bases; VS38 requests a registered ideographic glyph form. Both are invisible, but their valid pairs differ.
Questions people ask
1Why does 󠄕 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
