yi syllable bbe

Yi Syllable Bbe

ꁪ writes the Nuosu Yi syllable romanized as “bbe”; on its own, it has no single English translation. In Liangshan Yi Pinyin, bbe ends without a tone letter, marking a mid-level tone. A Yi input method can enter bbe and offer candidates, while a square on screen usually means the font lacks Yi coverage.

What ꁪ means

ꁪ writes the Nuosu syllable romanized as “bbe.”

Nuosu is a Yi language spoken in Liangshan. Liangshan Yi Pinyin spells it with Latin letters; a syllable ending without the tone letters t, x, or p has a mid-level tone. ꁪ contributes one syllable to a complete Nuosu word, so its meaning comes from that whole word and its context.

What did older Yi writing preserve?

Older Yi traditions used writing for ritual and practical knowledge.

Older Yi traditions used writing chiefly for religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts. Bimo—Yi ritual specialists—copied and taught them through lineages, rather than using the script as a general intercommunity writing system. Some scholars date inscriptions on pottery, stone, bronze, and bone to well over a thousand years ago. The earliest securely dated surviving monument is a bronze bell from 1485; Yi paper manuscripts survive from around 1500.

How did the script change?

The Liangshan standard brought Yi writing into public use.

Devised in 1974 and officially promulgated in 1980, it selected forms from older Northern Yi traditions and matched them to modern Nuosu speech. The result is a syllabary—a set of signs, each writing one syllable. By 2024, Sichuan Yi writing appeared in education, newspapers, public signs, literature, religious writing, and video subtitles. Older records also use Cuan and Wei as names for Yi writing. A proposed link to a lost script associated with Qiangic languages remains a hypothesis, not settled ancestry.

Specific to Nuosu Yi writing; outside a Nuosu text, it reads as a sample of the script.

Do not treat bbe by itself as a complete English word.
