yi syllable nrep

Yi Syllable Nrep

927/1165

ꎞ is a Nuosu Yi syllable; its romanized index form is nrep. A Nuosu word list uses it in a word glossed “retreat; withdraw,” but the standalone glyph does not guarantee that English meaning. It belongs to a standardized syllabary created in the 1970s from older, locally varying Yi writing.

What ꎞ means

ꎞ is a syllable used in written Nuosu Yi. Its romanized index form is nrep.

A 2022 Nuosu syllabary gives it a word-level gloss of “retreat; withdraw.” The glyph alone does not settle that translation: one Yi syllable can represent different words depending on the surrounding text. In Yi Pinyin, the final p marks a low-falling tone, the syllable’s pitch pattern.

Yi script history: what changed?

Yi writing predates the modern standard by centuries. Proposed early inscriptions include disputed Western Han (206 BCE–9 CE) examples. The earliest surviving securely dated example is a bronze bell from 1485; paper Yi texts survive from the late Ming period.

Traditional Yi writing appears in religious, magical, medical, and genealogical texts copied by bimo, Yi religious specialists. Standardization addressed low literacy, local variation, and a mismatch with modern speech: the Liangshan form was devised in 1974 and promulgated in 1980 as a phonetic syllabary for one dialect.

The Liangshan standard belongs to Northern Yi traditions. Yi writing traditions in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Guangxi differ in glyphs, sounds, and reading direction; this standard does not cover them all.

How do I type ꎞ?

Use a Yi-aware input method. Enter nrep in an input method that supports Yi; the letters select this syllable rather than translate it. Ordinary Latin typing alone does not produce ꎞ.

It belongs in written Nuosu Yi; outside a Yi-language context, its meaning is hard to read.

Do not translate ꎞ alone as “withdraw”; that gloss belongs to one word entry.

Questions people ask

2

Why is ꎞ missing from my font?

It is a font-coverage problem. Use a font with Yi syllables, such as Nuosu SIL; a box means the character is unavailable in that font.

Can ꎞ mean “withdraw”?

It can in a word-level gloss, not by itself. A 2022 Nuosu syllabary gives ꎞ the gloss “retreat; withdraw”; the surrounding words determine the translation.
