What ͜ means
It binds two sound symbols into one phonetic segment.
Phonetic writing records speech sounds. In sequences such as m͜b, k͜x, or t͜s, the mark tells you to read the pair as one sound unit, not two separate sounds. That can represent an affricate—a sound that starts with a brief closure and releases with friction—or two sounds made at the same time.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), a system for writing speech sounds, allows the tie above or below; both mark the same phonetic relation. Writers choose the position that leaves nearby marks readable.
Why is ͜ called the papyrological hyphen?
Greek manuscripts used it to join parts of a word.
Greek papyri—texts written on sheets made from the papyrus plant—use the low mark to link parts of a compound word that belong together. British Museum Papyrus 3036 preserves this word-linking use. Oxyrhynchus Papyrus 2436, another Greek papyrus, shows it in musical notation, where it links one sung syllable across two notes.
The name papyrological hyphen recalls the manuscript use. In phonetic writing, the joining mark connects speech symbols instead. When an edition separates word parts with spaces, the old linking mark is no longer needed.
Why does ͜ land in the wrong place?
It must sit between the two letters it joins.
Keep a sequence such as t͜s uninterrupted, with no space between the letters and the mark. The separate spacing character ‿ can link across a boundary; it does not bind two phonetic symbols into one sound unit.
Some fonts place the bar awkwardly or collide it with nearby superscripts, subscripts, or other marks. A font with phonetic mark positioning can help; if marks crowd the lower position, move the tie to the other side.
Specialist notation for phonetics and Greek texts or music; not a general-purpose prose mark.
Use ‿ for a link across a boundary, not for one phonetic segment.
