combining double parentheses above

Combining Double Parentheses Above

Write ᪼ after a letter and its above diacritic; it is meant to enclose that earlier mark and soften its effect. It belongs to Teuthonista-style phonetic and dialect transcription, where layered marks record fine pronunciation distinctions. Some fonts place it incorrectly, so check the whole sequence.

What ᪼ means

Write the base letter, its above diacritic, then ᪼.

In text order, ᪼ follows the letter and its earlier mark; the intended display puts its doubled parentheses around that mark. The difference between sequence order and visible position is the main input trap.

The transcription system's key tells you which sound change the enclosed mark signals. By itself, ᪼ shows only the mark, not what it attaches to.

What does ᪼ mean in Teuthonista?

It softens the effect of an above diacritic.

In Teuthonista and related dialect notation, parentheses soften a modifier's effect, though local conventions can refine the reading. The Teuthonista tradition reaches the 19th century; Philipp Lenz's system appeared in 1900, and Hermann Teuchert presented a lightly revised form in the Teuthonista journal in 1924–1925. A related Böhmer–Ascoli line grew from Lepsius and Ascoli's phonetic work and influenced dialect atlases—systematic maps and records of local speech—in Switzerland, Italy, and Germany. These traditions record fine pronunciation details, but their marks need not have identical readings; follow the transcription key.

What if a font puts ᪼ in the wrong place?

Test the full sequence in a font that supports this notation.

᪼ should sit around the preceding above diacritic, not stack as a new layer above the base letter. A font can draw a recognizable mark yet attach it to the wrong object.

A Noto font issue from 2018 documents U+1ABC placed above the base mark instead of around it. If the mark floats over the letter, try a different font or text renderer. Replacing it with two spacing parentheses changes the character sequence.

Specialist phonetic notation used in dialect transcription; out of place as ordinary punctuation.

Do not treat ᪼ as punctuation: it modifies the preceding above diacritic.

Why does ᪼ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
