The flexed arm came from Japanese mobile carriers, which put small picture characters in text messages before emoji were standardized. By 2010 Unicode’s background data mapped 💪 to carrier symbols from KDDI and SoftBank; KDDI labelled its picture 力こぶ, Japanese for “flexed muscle”. Unicode adopted the shared sign so phones on different networks could exchange it. The label was literal; everyday use widened it to determination and encouragement.

They are backing the effort you mentioned. After a hard task, setback, or recovery, read 💪 as “stay strong, I’m behind you”, not as a remark about your body. A simple thanks is the right reply.

It misfires as the entire reply to grief, illness, or frightening news: one glyph does all the emotional work and can look like minimum-effort sympathy. If you are the sender, wrap a sentence around it.
