What 𘭺 means
Its role depends on its neighbors. The script mixed whole-word signs with sound signs, usually grouped into words.
Traditional inscriptions ran downward in vertical columns from right to left; Unicode 18.0 also allows horizontal cluster layouts.
How did Khitan writing develop?
Tradition credits Yelü Diela with its design around 925. It followed the Khitan Large Script: Chinese characters shaped its forms, while Uyghur writing inspired its sound system. A 2026 study questions its early spread. It names the Wugulin Taishi tomb inscription (1051) as the oldest securely dated survivor and argues for wider standardization later under Emperor Shengzong. It served Liao administration, poetry and diplomacy; the Jin kept it in use after Liao fell, and Jurchen scripts drew on both Khitan systems. Surviving examples include tombstone inscriptions.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘭺 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
