What 𘭻 means
It is a sign in the historical writing system for Khitan.
Around 925 CE, scholar Yelü Diela is credited with creating this script to write Khitan. Its forms draw on Chinese characters, while its phonetic design is linked to Uyghur writing.
Khitan writing also had a separate Large Script. The small script stayed in use in the Liao, Western Liao, and Jin dynasties. Jurchen writing later drew on Khitan models. Many surviving texts are stone grave memorials.
Can 𘭻 be read on its own?
The inscription, not this glyph alone, determines its role.
Khitan small script mixes signs for whole words with signs for sounds; sound-signs usually form groups of two to eight characters per word. As of 2026, it remains partly deciphered; epitaph studies refine readings. The original inscription shows 𘭻’s role.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘭻 show as a box on some devices?
It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
