What 𘯃 means
Kane’s index glosses 𘯃 as “TEXT.”
That makes it a logogram: a sign for a whole word or idea, not a sound. The script is only partly deciphered, so “TEXT” is a scholarly gloss, not a guaranteed reading in every passage.
How did the script develop?
It was developed to write the Khitan language.
Tradition credits Khitan prince Yelü Diela with creating it around 925, using forms based on Chinese characters and inspiration from the Uyghur script, a writing system used by Uyghurs. A 2026 study argues that practical use may have begun later. As of 2026, the earliest securely dated surviving inscription is Yelü Yugulin Taishi’s epitaph (1051). Used in the Liao, Qara-Khitai, and Jin periods, the script served records, poetry, histories, translations, and exams. Jurchen scriptmakers adapted both Khitan scripts; a Jin edict abolished them in 1191.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘯃 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
