What 𘯭 means
Context, not shape alone, reveals its role.
When a Khitan word is spelled sound by sound, it usually uses a compact cluster, or group, of several characters. Read across then down within the group; Khitan text runs vertically, from right to left.
When was Khitan small script first attested?
A 2026 study identifies the earliest securely dated surviving text as 1051.
That is Wugulin Taishi’s tomb inscription. Traditional accounts credit Yelü Diela, the Liao emperor’s brother, with creating the script around 925; the study argues it was systematized under Liao Emperor Shengzong. Small script stood beside distinct Khitan large script; Jin-era Jurchen writing borrowed from both. Its design is said to draw on Uyghur writing, though the forms look little alike.

1Why does 𘯭 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
