khitan small script character-18cc7

Khitan Small Script Character 18CC7

456/471

𘳇 is reconstructed as do, a Khitan dative-locative ending: a grammar marker for “to” or “at.” “Small” names the later Khitan script, not a smaller sign. Unicode 18.0.0 gives the character a code-point label, not its historical reading.

Text symbol

What 𘳇 means

It marks a noun’s “to/at” role; do is its reconstructed sound.

“Dative-locative” means a case ending for a destination or location. The written reading do records scholars’ reconstructed pronunciation; the ending’s job is grammatical.

When was Khitan small script first used?

Tradition places its creation around 925; surviving evidence is later.

Tradition credits Yelü Diela and Uyghur writing; the earlier large script drew on Chinese characters. Both wrote Khitan in records and inscriptions. A 2026 study questions the timeline: it argues small script was standardized later and identifies a 1051 tomb epitaph for Wugulin Taishi as the earliest securely dated surviving text. Khitan small script remained in use into Jin rule; later Jurchen writing borrowed Khitan models.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 𘳇 show as a box on some devices?

It is recent: Unicode added it in version 13.0 (2020), and phones and computers whose fonts are older than that have nothing to draw it with. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
