left-facing fish

Left-Facing Fish

Unicode preserves this left-facing game sprite from Sharp’s MZ-700. The computer used built-in character pictures for game graphics, one screen cell at a time. In right-to-left text, the fish still faces left.

What 𜲒 means

It was ready-made game art. Released in 1982, the MZ-700 built its screen from 8×8 character cells; this fish was F0 in its European alternate picture set.

How did the MZ-700 display the fish?

A program switched the cell to the alternate set. On the 1982 European MZ-700, neither the keyboard nor BASIC (its programming language) could enter these extra symbols. A program used POKE (a command that writes directly to memory) to put F0 in video memory (screen memory) and select the alternate set.

Does the fish face right in Arabic text?

No; it stays left-facing. Unicode 16.0 does not mark this character for automatic mirroring, so Arabic or Hebrew text direction alone will not reverse the fish.

Why does 𜲒 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
