Cooking & Kitchen Emoji

Cooking emoji start with the cook , the frying pan , the pot , the paella pan and the kitchen knife , and go on through everything a recipe needs: spoon , salt , butter , garlic , the timer and the fire under it all. Below they are arranged the way a kitchen works, from the stove to the chopping board, the pantry, the oven and the washing up, with combos for recipe posts, meal plans and food blogs.

Cooking emoji: the cook, the frying pan and the pot

is the emoji officially named Cooking, and every major platform draws it as a fried egg in a frying pan. It is the cooking emoji people reach for first: making breakfast, I'm cooking tonight, a recipe post, a cooking class. Because the egg is in the picture, it doubles as the fried egg emoji; is the whole egg, raw or boiled. shallow pan of food is the wide pan, drawn as a paella with shrimp and vegetables, so it stands for paella, a skillet dinner, a casserole or anything cooked in one pan. pot of food is the deep pot: stew, soup, hot pot, chili, anything that simmers. fondue, added in 2020, is the shared pot of melted cheese or chocolate, and bowl with spoon is the serving: porridge, cereal, soup, congee.

The person doing the work is cook, the chef emoji, in white jacket and toque. Its gendered forms and arrived in 2016; the neutral followed in 2019. Use it for a chef, a home cook, a cooking show, a restaurant kitchen, or as a compliment: is the chef's kiss, fingers pinched together and kissed, meaning something is perfect. In slang, cooking means performing brilliantly and let him cook means give him room to finish what he is doing; and carry that sense in comments and sports chat. Cooked, on the other hand, means done for, finished, exhausted.

Heat and time have their own emoji. fire is the flame under the pan and, far more often, the word hot or amazing. hot springs began life as the Japanese map symbol for an onsen, but in messages it stands for steam rising off anything hot: a bowl of noodles, a kettle, a freshly opened oven. is the puff of steam or smoke. timer clock is a kitchen timer, the only emoji built for twenty minutes at 180 degrees; times a quick step and is the egg timer and the wait while the bread proves. thermometer is the meat or sugar thermometer when a recipe depends on temperature, and fire extinguisher is the honest ending of some first attempts.

Kitchen knife, spoon, fork and chopsticks

kitchen knife entered Unicode in 2010 under the name Hocho, the Japanese word for a kitchen knife (包丁), and that is still its slug on many keyboards. In a recipe it means chop, slice, dice; on its own it can read as a threat or a horror joke, so pair it with an onion or a chopping-board verb when you mean dinner. spoon came surprisingly late, in 2016, six years after fork and knife: for the first years of emoji there was no way to stir. is bare cutlery and means a restaurant, a meal or let's eat; fork and knife with plate, from 2014, is a laid place setting, so it says dinner is served, a dinner party, or the table itself. chopsticks (2017) belong with and any East Asian dish.

The rest of the counter: balance scale stands in for the kitchen scale when a recipe is by weight, teapot is the kettle as well as the tea, pouring liquid is pouring stock, oil or water into the pan, ice is the ice cube, and jar covers jam, pickles, preserves and the pantry shelf. There is no single kitchen emoji, no oven, no stove, no whisk and no pan without an egg in it; the picture of a kitchen is built from these parts, and is the usual three-character shorthand for it.

Ingredient emoji for recipes: pantry, vegetables, meat and fish

The pantry row is the one food bloggers use most. egg, butter, salt, cheese, milk, honey, canned food, olive (and so olive oil), sheaf of rice for grain and flour, cooked rice and beans. salt arrived in 2018 and butter in 2019, which is why older posts spell out a pinch of salt with no emoji at all. also means salty, that is, bitter about something, so read it with its neighbours.

Aromatics and seasoning: garlic and onion, both from 2019, hot pepper for chili and anything spicy, bell pepper for the mild one, ginger root (2022), herb for basil, parsley, thyme and the rest, lemon and lime for juice and zest. Then the vegetables you actually chop: tomato, potato, carrot, and mushrooms, leafy greens, broccoli, eggplant, corn, pea pod, root vegetable (the beet, radish and turnip emoji added in 2024) and chestnut for roasting. The full fruit and vegetable set lives in Fruit & Vegetable Emoji; this page keeps the ones that go in a pan.

For protein: cut of meat is the raw steak, bacon, poultry leg for chicken, meat on bone for a roast or ribs, and from the sea fish, shrimp, crab, lobster and oyster. A recipe written in emoji usually goes ingredients first, then the method, then the dish: .

Baking emoji and home-cooked dishes

Baking has the richest set of all. bread, croissant, baguette, flatbread, pretzel, bagel, pancakes, waffle, pie, cupcake, cookie, birthday cake and a slice of cake. The usual baking combo is the ingredients turning into the result: . and are the ones that read as baking rather than dessert, and means the cookies are in the oven. Finished sweets, ice cream and candy have their own page, Dessert & Sweets Emoji.

Home-cooked dinners that come out of these pans: green salad, sandwich, spaghetti for any pasta, curry rice, dumplings, a steaming bowl of noodles or soup, and oden, the skewer emoji, which stands in for kebabs and anything grilled on a stick. For takeaway, burgers and pizza see Fast Food Emoji, and for the Japanese set Sushi & Asian Food Emoji; the whole table is in Food & Drink Emoji.

Washing up, shopping and the reactions

A kitchen is also where the cleaning happens. sponge is the dishwashing emoji, with soap and bubbles for the suds, bucket, broom for the floor, basket for the bread or picnic basket, and mouse trap for the uninvited guest. Most of these were added together in 2018 and 2020 when Unicode filled in the household objects. Shopping for the recipe is shopping cart and receipt, and notebook is the recipe book, the closest thing to a recipe card emoji.

The reactions that belong to food: face savoring food is yum, drooling face is I want that, pinched fingers is the Italian gesture that became the chef's kiss, OK hand means it came out perfect, and hot face is what the hot pepper did. One confusion worth clearing up: Emoji Kitchen is not a set of cooking emoji. It is a feature of Google's Gboard keyboard, launched in 2020 and later built into Google Search, that mashes two emoji into one sticker. The cooking emoji on this page are ordinary Unicode characters and paste anywhere.
