What ̐ means
Type the base letter first, then add the mark.
A combining mark follows the character it modifies. Type the letter or vowel first, then ̐; a̐ shows the order. Without a base letter, a font has no anchor for it, so the mark may appear detached.
In a Unicode-aware editor, enter it after the base; in HTML, write ̐ in the same position.
Is ̐ the same as ँ?
No; use the sign made for the script you are writing.
U0310 is a general combining form used in Latin, Cyrillic, and Greek transcription and transliteration—the writing of a word from one script using another. The Devanagari sign ँ is a distinct character with its own shaping rules, though Unicode cross-references the two because both mark nasalization.
Bengali has its own candrabindu, ঁ, for nasalizing the preceding vowel; Bengali spelling distinguishes it from anusvara, which represents a nasal consonant. Hindi may use anusvara when another vowel sign already takes the space above a letter.
What sound does candrabindu mark?
A nasalized vowel: air passes through the nose as you say it.
The candrabindu sign appears in writing traditions associated with the Vedas, ancient Indian sacred texts, and in regional scripts. Its use in Sanskrit materials is recorded from at least the 19th century.
A specialist transcription mark used with letters, not as standalone punctuation.
