What ͟ means
Type the first letter, insert ͟, then type the second. It sits between the letters it connects, as in d͟h or a͟i, and draws one underbar across the pair. In a digraph (two letters treated as one written unit), the line can preserve that distinction when formatting is unavailable.
The line has no fixed sound on its own; each writing system assigns its meaning. Arabic transliteration uses d͟h for one Arabic letter. BGN/PCGN tables use s͟h and z͟h in Adyghe and Afghan romanization. A North American spelling example uses a͟i for one marked unit.
What does combining double macron below mean?
The spelling convention decides what the line marks. It may distinguish a digraph or show that two letters form one written unit; it is not ordinary formatting. In 2002, a Unicode proposal cited double marks already found in English dictionaries and teaching materials, including Webster’s Collegiate and American Heritage. That documents earlier print use, not when the convention began.
Why does combining double macron below disappear?
A font or editor can fail to draw the full two-letter span. Unicode line-breaking guidance keeps double-diacritic spans together, but fonts can vary in how they anchor or weight the line. If it disappears, check the underlying character sequence before changing the spelling.
Technical spelling notation; the line carries meaning only when a writing or transliteration convention assigns it one.
As decoration, it can change which letters count as a marked unit.
