Folded hands: medium skin tone

Context decides: 🙏 is thanks, a plea, prayer, or respect.

In chat, placement does the work: after a favor it says thanks; beside a request it says please, sometimes pleading; next to prayer or blessing words it reads as devotion. Two in a row turn up whatever the sentence already carries.

The gesture was not invented for phones. Buddhist scriptures in Pali, an ancient Indian language, describe people greeting a teacher with joined palms; tradition holds this canon was first written down in the first century BCE. Early reliefs on stupas (dome-shaped Buddhist monuments) show the pose in veneration. South Asian traditions call it añjali; Japanese Buddhist practice calls a related form gasshō.

What does it mean when someone sends 🙏?

Thanks or please are the common readings; the sentence decides.

After you helped someone, a bare 🙏 is a compact thank-you; a reply is optional, not owed. Tacked onto an ask, it adds respect without cancelling the request: the deadline stands. A study of Indonesian university WhatsApp groups found students using it just this way to thank lecturers, apologize, and ask for things.

Under illness, loss, or other bad news, it may mean prayer, hope, or plain support. Research on prayer reactions in health-crisis updates found people disagree about what they communicate, so add words when the religious meaning matters.

Is 🙏 prayer or high five?

Prayer or please is the safer default; high five is a minority reading.

The picture is one person's palms pressed together. It reached Unicode from Japanese phone emoji sets: an au by KDDI design from 2003 showed a bowed figure with folded hands, a prayer-and-pleading pose.

An older Apple design added yellow rays around the fingers, which made the hands look like a celebratory slap. By 2015 Apple had removed the rays; by 2018 major vendors' designs had converged. Some readers still see a high five, so if you mean one, say so.
