What 𘬩 means
The chart name identifies the graph; it is not a translation.
Khitan Small Script uses word signs, which can stand alone, and sound signs, which usually combine in clusters to spell words.
Script-aware layout keeps clusters together in vertical or horizontal text.
Why was Khitan Small Script created?
Traditional histories place its creation around 925.
They credit Yelü Diela, brother of Liao founder Yelü Abaoji, with devising it to write Khitan. Its design drew on Chinese character forms, with Uyghur writing a reported inspiration.
A 2026 study disputes early adoption: the oldest securely dated surviving text is a 1051 epitaph, and it argues formal adoption came later under Emperor Shengzong, possibly for administration. The Jin dynasty banned Khitan writing in 1191; its Jurchen scripts drew on both Khitan systems.

1Why does 𘬩 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
