What 𘬮 means
Daniel Kane’s 2009 index reconstructs 𘬮 as “di.”
Khitan Small Script phonograms usually join into word-sized clusters, so this sign alone is not a full translation.
When did Khitan Small Script begin?
Tradition dates its creation to around 925.
The account credits Yelü Diela, younger brother of Taizu, the founder of the Khitan-led Liao dynasty. It says Uyghur writing inspired the design, though the two scripts share few visual similarities. A 2026 study argues standardization came later under Liao ruler Shengzong; the earliest securely dated surviving example is a 1051 tomb inscription.
The small script also remained in use into the Jin period. Most surviving examples are funerary epitaphs—stone burial inscriptions—and others appear on walls, monuments, mirrors, tallies, coins and a jade cup.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𘬮 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
