Tangut Component 656

656/768

𘪏 is a Tangut component used to index and analyze complete characters; on its own, it has no established word meaning. Tangut writing served the Western Xia state and continued in Buddhist and other texts after its fall. If it displays as a box, the app likely lacks a Tangut font.

Text symbol

What 𘪏 means

It is a component for analyzing full Tangut characters, not a word. It also appears as Tangut Radical-400 in some index material; that label names a structural part, not a translation. Components may indicate meaning, sound, or both, so one component alone does not settle how a complete character is read.

The Tangut script took shape around 1036 for the Western Xia state. Early surviving witnesses include a court-record manuscript proposed for 1070/1071 and an official document sent to a military inspector in 1072.

Why did Tangut writing use components?

Components let scholars index and analyze full Tangut characters. A character can combine semantic parts, which contribute to meaning, sound-bearing parts, or both; a component alone cannot tell you the full character’s reading.

The Western Xia promoted Tangut writing for administration and literature and as a marker of state identity. It drew structural inspiration from Chinese writing and followed the Khitan example of a state script, but Tangut is a separate script and is not readable as Chinese. Buddhist texts make up a large share of what survives. Tangut writing continued after Western Xia fell in 1227, including in Yuan and Ming settings; a 1502 inscription is late evidence of that use.

Why does Tangut Component 656 show as a box?

A font or app without Tangut coverage is showing a fallback. A browser or app without Tangut font support may render 𘪏 as an empty box, a box with an X, or a diamond. Those shapes are placeholders; they do not alter the character in the text.

Technical and archival: this component belongs in Tangut study, character indexing, and font testing, not as a word in ordinary text.

Do not give 𘪏 a reading without the full Tangut character it belongs to.

Can Tangut Component 656 be used as Chinese?

No. Tangut is a separate script inspired in part by Chinese character structure; knowing Chinese does not make a Tangut character readable as Chinese.
