bottom half forward-facing runner frame-4

Forward-Facing Runner, Bottom Half, Frame 4

𜷴 is the lower half of one pose in a forward-facing runner animation from the Mattel Aquarius. Games built pictures from fixed character tiles; Unicode preserves these old symbols so legacy character data can be converted into modern text software.

What 𜷴 means

It is the lower tile of a two-cell running figure. In the 1983 Mattel Aquarius character set, the forward-facing runner had one fixed top half and four changing lower halves. 𜷴 is the fourth pose; a “frame” is one pose in an animation.

For the Aquarius's 1983 release, graphic designers Joe Ferreira, Monique Lujan-Bakerink and Peggi Decarli assembled the wider character set from programmers' requests for game-screen pieces. The computer had no programmable graphics, so its games built scenes from ready-made tiles. A 2021 Unicode proposal sought to make this legacy character data convertible into modern text software.

Why does 𜷴 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
