Fullwidth Text (Vaporwave Letters)

Fullwidth text is the wide, evenly spaced lettering of vaporwave: aesthetic, VAPORWAVE, 0123. Below are all 26 capitals A–Z, all 26 small letters a–z, the digits 0–9 and every fullwidth sign from ! and ? to and , plus the Japanese brackets 【 】 「 」 that vaporwave titles borrow.

What fullwidth text is

A fullwidth character is a Latin letter, digit or sign drawn as wide as a Chinese or Japanese character, so it fills a whole square cell: A instead of A, a instead of a, 1 instead of 1, ! instead of !. Set side by side, they give the airy, spaced-out look of FULLWIDTH TEXT that people also call wide text, vaporwave letters or the aesthetic font.

It is not a font. Each wide letter is its own Unicode character in the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms block, which is why it survives copy and paste into bios, chats and comments where no font can be chosen. The 94 characters from U+FF01 ! to U+FF5E mirror the printable ASCII keyboard set one for one, in the same order.

The idea comes from Japanese computing. Japanese encodings such as JIS X 0208 and Shift JIS carried a second, double-width copy of the Latin alphabet and digits that lined up with kanji in the same grid; Japanese calls it zenkaku (full-width), and the narrow ordinary letters hankaku (half-width). Unicode kept both so that old Japanese, Chinese and Korean text converts back and forth without loss.

Vaporwave text and the AESTHETIC look

Vaporwave, the internet music and art scene of the early 2010s, built its look from the consumer culture of the 1980s and 1990s: shopping-mall muzak, early computers, marble statues, palm trees, pink-and-teal sunsets and Japanese packaging. Macintosh Plus's 2011 album Floral Shoppe, with its Japanese titles and a classical bust on a checkered grid, became the scene's emblem, and wide letters became its house style: aesthetic, vaporwave, A E S T H E T I C.

Fullwidth letters look half-Japanese and half-machine, which is exactly the nostalgic, slightly unreal mood the style wants. Small letters read dreamy (chill), capitals read loud or ironic (STRESS). Framing a title in the lenticular brackets 【 】 or corner brackets 「 」 finishes the look: 【VAPORWAVE】.

Fullwidth punctuation, digits and currency in Japanese and Chinese

Outside vaporwave, fullwidth characters are everyday typing in East Asia. In Japanese and Chinese text the punctuation is fullwidth so it sits in its own square between characters: 本当? ends with ?, a colon before a list is : and an aside opens with (. The comma and full stop of running Japanese text are the ideographic ones, 、 and 。.

Japanese web forms often ask for numbers or letters in full-width (全角で) or in half-width (半角で), and a postcode typed the wrong way can be rejected, so the distinction is a practical one there. Prices on signs and receipts often use , the fullwidth yen; is its Korean won counterpart.

Two look-alikes trip people up. (fullwidth tilde, U+FF5E) and 〜 (wave dash, U+301C) look the same in many fonts and both mean 'from … to' in Japanese ; Windows maps the Japanese wave dash to the fullwidth tilde while other systems use the wave dash, so the two get swapped in conversions. And - is the fullwidth hyphen-minus, not the long dash ー of katakana.

How to type fullwidth text and the fullwidth space

The quickest way is to tap the letters here and copy them, or copy a ready word from the combos below. On a Japanese or Chinese keyboard, switch the input method to full-width mode and type as usual. Microsoft Word has Full-width under Change Case once an East Asian language is enabled, and Excel's =DBCS(A1) turns half-width letters full-width (depending on your language settings).

Generators and scripts do it with one line of arithmetic: every fullwidth character sits exactly 65,248 (0xFEE0) code points after its ASCII twin, so A (U+0041) becomes A (U+FF21). The ordinary space is the exception: its wide partner is the ideographic space U+3000, which lives in a different block. Copy it from between these brackets: [ ]. In Word, type 3000 and press Alt X.

Fullwidth letters exist only for the plain ASCII set. There is no fullwidth é, ñ or ß, so accented words mix widths (café), and strict username fields, such as Instagram handles and Discord usernames, accept only plain letters, digits and a few signs. Display names, bios, captions and messages take fullwidth text fine.

Hyvä tietää

  • Every fullwidth ASCII character sits exactly 65,248 (0xFEE0) code points after its ordinary twin, which is why a vaporwave text converter is a single line of code.
  • There is no fullwidth space in the fullwidth block: the wide space is U3000 IDEOGRAPHIC SPACE, in the CJK Symbols and Punctuation block.
  • The white parentheses ⦅ ⦆ joined the fullwidth set later than the rest, in Unicode 3.2 (2002).
  • Unicode normalisation (NFKC) maps every fullwidth character back to its plain form, so software that normalises text treats aesthetic and aesthetic as the same word.
  • In Japanese encodings the byte that is a backslash in ASCII stands for the yen sign, so Japanese Windows has long shown file paths as C:Windows.

How do I copy and paste vaporwave text?

Tap the fullwidth letters in the grid one by one, or copy a ready word from the combos such as aesthetic or 【VAPORWAVE】, then paste with Ctrl V, Cmd V or long-press and Paste.

What are full width characters?

Full width characters are letters, digits and signs drawn as wide as a Chinese or Japanese character, one square each: A b 3 !. They come from Japanese computing, where they are called zenkaku, and Unicode keeps them in the Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms block. Outside Asia they are best known as vaporwave or aesthetic text.

What is the difference between fullwidth and halfwidth?

Halfwidth (hankaku) characters are the narrow ordinary ones, A a 1 !, taking half a kanji's width; fullwidth (zenkaku) characters take the full square: A a 1 !. Japanese also has halfwidth katakana such as ア イ ウ, squeezed versions of ア イ ウ from early computers.

How do I type a full width space?

The fullwidth space is U3000, the ideographic space. Copy it from between these brackets: [ ]. In Word type 3000 and press Alt X; with a Japanese input method in full-width mode, the space bar types it.

How do I make full width text without a generator?

Copy letters from this page, switch a Japanese or Chinese keyboard to full-width mode, use Change Case Full-width in Word with an East Asian language enabled, or DBCS() in Excel. Any converter just adds 0xFEE0 to each ASCII character code.

Can I use fullwidth text on Instagram, TikTok and Discord?

Yes in bios, display names, captions, comments and messages. Instagram handles and Discord usernames only allow plain letters, digits and a few signs, so fullwidth letters will not work there.
