combining devanagari digit one

Combining Devanagari Digit One

2/32

꣡ is a digit-shaped mark in Sāmaveda notation, the musical notation for an Indian collection of Vedic chants; it guides pitch or timing rather than counting one. Its reading changes by context: it can mark a high tone, a sung tone, or how long to hold one.

Text symbol

What ꣡ means

It gives a chant instruction; it does not count “one.”

In Sāmaveda-Saṃhitā text, ꣡ marks udātta, the high tone. In Sāmagāna, the sung form of the Sāmaveda, it marks prathama or kruṣṭa—the first or seventh sung tone. Above a secondary-tone numeral, it can say to hold that tone for one mora, a short unit of chant timing.

The notation is older than Unicode: a Devanagari Sāmaveda manuscript dated 1568/69 contains padapāṭha symbols (marks for correct chanting), and a Kauthuma Sāmaveda manuscript from 1583 places numbers above text lines to cue hand gestures for tone. These examples show the marks served as performance instructions for ritual chant.

These marks belong to a broader Sāmavedic notation that combines digits, letters, and avagraha signs (used for omitted sounds in Sanskrit writing). The Kauthuma and Rāṇāyanīya traditions place raised marks over individual syllables; Jaiminīya notation uses full characters above or below a phrase.

Why does ꣡ sit above another letter?

It follows the syllable it changes, then the font draws it above. As a combining mark, ꣡ has no spacing width of its own. Standing alone, it may look blank; its placement can also vary with the font and shaping system.

In running Devanagari text, place it immediately after the syllable it modifies.

A technical marker for Vedic chant; it belongs in annotated Sāmaveda text, not ordinary counting.

For the number one in Devanagari, use १; ꣡ is a chant mark.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ꣡ look blank when copied?

It has no spacing width by itself, so a standalone mark may appear blank. A Devanagari-capable font and shaping system place it over the preceding syllable.
