What 🎏 means
It points to Japanese Children's Day or a spring scene in Japan. Around late April and early May, families and towns across Japan raise carp streamers outdoors, so 🎏 turns up in Kodomo no Hi greetings, family posts celebrating kids, and Golden Week travel photos.
Outside that season or outside Japan, people often use it by appearance alone: as a colourful banner for a street fair, a summer festival, an aquarium visit, or a fishing trip. Because the cultural meaning isn't obvious to everyone, spell out the occasion if you're sending a wish for a child's growth.
What are koinobori and why are they shaped like carp?
They are wind-filled cloth carp that stand for courage and perseverance. Koinobori (鯉のぼり, literally "carp banners") catch the spring breeze through an open mouth so they look like fish swimming upstream in the sky. The custom draws on the Chinese legend of the Dragon Gate, where a carp that leaps up a fierce waterfall transforms into a dragon.
The emoji shows two carp—usually one blue or black and one red—on a pole topped with a spinning pinwheel (yaguruma). A full household pole stacks a five-coloured streamer at the very top, a large black carp (magoi) for the father, a red carp (higoi) for the mother, and smaller carp in blue, green, or orange for each child.
Samurai households began flying carp banners during the Edo period for Tango no Sekku, the fifth day of the fifth month, traditionally Boys' Day (paired with the March 3 Doll Festival, , for girls). Since 1948, May 5 has been a national holiday for all children.
Warm, festive, and family-friendly; unmistakably Japanese when used in spring.
Outside Japan, many recipients see only a decorative fish flag unless you name the holiday.

4Worth knowing
- On Slack, Discord, and GitHub, its shortcode is
:flags:because early Japanese carrier sets translated the double-carp icon generically as "flags." - In modern Japan, families in apartments often hang miniature koinobori on balconies or string dozens of them on cables across rivers instead of raising a tall garden pole.
Questions people ask
2Is 🎏 only for boys?
No. While the May 5 festival was historically Boys' Day (Tango no Sekku) and traditional poles flew carp for sons, Japan's national holiday has celebrated all children since 1948, and modern sets include carp for daughters too.
What do the black and red fish on 🎏 represent?
In a traditional family set, the top black carp (magoi) represents the father, the red carp (higoi) represents the mother, and additional smaller carp below them represent each child.
