Arabic Tone Loop Below

79/95

࣯ marks a long-rising pitch on a vowel in Rohingya Fonna, the Arabic-script way to write Rohingya. “Below” describes its place outside a vowel sign written beneath its consonant. Hanifi Rohingya, a different script for the same language, uses another sign for that pitch pattern.

Text symbol

What ࣯ means

It marks a long-rising pitch in Rohingya Fonna. A vowel sign supplies the vowel sound; “below” means this mark sits outside one written beneath its consonant.

A Rohingya Fonna tone mark like ࣯ belongs to the Arabic-script way of writing Rohingya. A 2010 Unicode proposal describes Arabic-script Rohingya as a tradition of more than 200 years because ordinary Arabic did not represent all its sounds. A community guide published in 2026 places Fonna in religious education; it describes Hanifi for formal publications and Rohingyalish, a Latin-based script, for digital communication.

A 2015 Unicode proposal maps this loop mark to 𐴥 in Hanifi Rohingya: that sign marks the same long-rising tone. The connection follows Rohingya writing systems, not just a similar-looking shape.

How do I type Arabic Tone Loop Below?

In a Fonna-aware editor, enter U08EF after the vowel sign it modifies. It is a combining mark, so by itself it may look detached or blank.

Fonna places tone marks outside the vowel sign: above a vowel written above its consonant, below a vowel written below it. The position changes where the mark sits, not the tone it represents.

The 2010 proposal favored separate tone-mark characters partly because some Arabic shaping engines could mishandle stacked diacritics assigned to the same class. If the mark floats or disappears, check the Fonna sequence and font support before changing the character.

In Fonna, this is a pronunciation mark: it marks pitch in the spoken syllable, not the writer’s mood.

Use it only with a below-position vowel in the Fonna tone pattern.

Why does ࣯ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Arabic Extended-A block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
